RadiBond Adhesion of Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a specialty thermoplastic polymer broadly used because of its high chemical resistance. Chemical resistance in many cases also makes it difficult to bind anything to the materials which are also true when it comes to PVDF adhesion. One of the most common applications of PVDF is for pipes, where especially the chemical resistance of the polymer is important. Pipes are either made entirely out of PVDF or in certain cases coated with a thin PVDF coating. Common brand names for PVDF are KF (Kureha), Hylar (Solvay), Kynar (Arkema) and Solef (Solvay). PVDF is furthermore found in a piezoelectric state, and hence also used in various electronic systems.

Adhesion of PVDF on stainless steel

Stainless steel elements coated with the RadiSurf™ PVDF Adhesion systems, allow for direct over-molding of metal elements with PVDF obtaining strong adhesion. In tensile tests of polished stainless steel elements over-molded with PVDF, we have obtained strengths in the limit of the cohesive strength of pure PVDF (35-40 MPa). The adhesion system may also be utilized in compression molding, ultrasonic welding etc.

Optimal adhesion of PVDF coatings on metal surfaces

The RadiSurf adhesion solutions work excellently as a primer for protective coatings. It may be an alternative to traditional primers, with the great advantages in coating application experienced using RadiSurf technology.

Apply coatings on metal surfaces without sandblasting

Utilizing the RadiSurf adhesion technology for PVDF, you will achieve strong adhesion on even smooth surfaces. Hence, you may in certain applications avoid sandblasting of your components prior to coating with PVDF.

Stability of adhesion layer

The RadiSurf™ PVDF Adhesion system is stable for normal storage conditions and stable metal surface coated with the system can be stored for at least 2-3 months prior to use without any effect on the strength of the final adhesion.
