Polymer Brushes changes the behaviour of surfaces
Polymer Brushes are like ultrathin plastic coatings with a unique chemical and physical structure allowing them to interact with the surroundings. By controlling the chemical and physical structure of the polymer brushes, we can change the properties of surfaces. By growing polymer brushes of polystyrene on a glass surface, we can make the glass behave as if was made entirely of polystyrene. That is reflected directly in the way it repels water, whereas the normal glass will attract the water.
As the glass surface now behaves as polystyrene, it is not only able to repel water, it is also able to bond directly to polystyrene in welding and over-molding processes. Imagine how this can open new opportunities when any surface – metal, glass etc. – can be made to behave as any kind of plastic.
Strong Adhesion with Polymer Brushes
As we can use our core technology to grow polymer brushes of distinctly different chemistry and structure, we can adapt them to various plastic materials as what we call nanoprimers. The polymer brushes are grown through a two-step process using our nanoprimer chemical kits. The surfaces with the polymer brushes are stable, dry and can be stored for months before assembly.
The unique properties of the polymer brushes is to a high degree due the growth from the surface resulting in a high density structure. The final assembly with the polymer part is done using traditional industrial methods, such as plastic over molding or welding techniques, or in the case of coatings and glues just by conventional direct application.
